Overview:

The Hochschule Wismar - University of Technology, Business and Design, together with its branch at Rostock-Warnemuende for Maritime Studies offers 14 degree programmes at seven departments for about 4000 students from more than 30 countries all over the world. The course and degree programmes comprise a wide variety ranging from engineering and sciences to specialisations in art and design. The Department of Maritime Studies at Rostock-Warnemuende, situated about 60 km westerly of Wismar, carries on a tradition of nautical training that dates back to the year 1846. The Department's infrastructure is complete, consisting of lecture halls, laboratories, a library, halls of residence, a canteen and medical offices. Experienced university lecturers, knowledgeable staff members and well-equipped laboratories provide a perfect setting for applied research work, academic innovations and continuing education (http://www.sf.hs-wismar.de ).

The staff comprises approximately 50 persons engaged in education and training, research and laboratories. This is a sound basis together with the excellent equipment:

•The Department's new Maritime Simulation Centre was opened and has successfully been operated its simulators (4 Shiphandling, 1 Ship engine and 1 VTS-simulator) since 1998 (http://www.sf.hs-wismar.de/mscw/english/index.html ),
•In parallel there are excellent laboratories for Navigation and Ship's Engine Operation.
The Department of Maritime Studies offers educational degree programmes in Nautical Science / Transport Operations and in Ship Operations Engineering / Plant Operations and Supply Engineering. One segment of each programme is designed to qualify students to achieve the highest Certification of Competency according to STCW 1995 for the Master Certificate and/or Chief Engineer Certificate, and the second segment teaches the skills required for working in shore-based facilities.

In parallel the department is providing further education and refresher courses for ships' officers (e.g. Bridge and Engine team training for regular operation and Emergency Management, special courses e.g. for Ro-Ro ship operation and high-speed craft) pilots and VTS personnel (mandatory training of all German VTS operators).
