The Journal publishes theoretical, empirical and pedagogical manuscripts that contribute to the academic and educational mission of the International Association of Maritime Universities. Single-authored manuscripts considered for editorial review must be authored by a faculty member employed either full or part time by an IAMU member institution. In the case of multiple-authored manuscripts considered for editorial review at least the lead author must be a faculty member employed either full or part time by an IAMU member institution.
Manuscripts are to be submitted in English and written in clear, straightforward language, avoiding jargon and technical terms. Manuscripts addressing topics that advance knowledge in the three areas of interest to IAMU member institutions as identified in the Basic Agreement: Maritime Education and Training Systems (Working Group I); Maritime Safety Management Systems (Working Group II); and the Promotion of Global Maritime Excellence (Working Group III); are invited for editorial review. The specific, detailed focus of each working group is provided at the IAMU website (http://www.iamu-edu.org/).
Theoretical manuscripts should provide a thorough literature review to advance knowledge and develop either a prescriptive or descriptive model. Empirical manuscripts should be methodologically sound; using appropriate analytical techniques in addition to providing a thorough literature review. Pedagogical manuscripts should develop teaching concepts and approaches based on a complete literature review to advance the teaching profession.
Manuscript acceptance may be influenced by the evaluations of external reviewers in conjunction with the editorial board's scholarly judgment. External reviewers are subject matter experts who are not members of the IAMU Editorial Board. Preference will be given to papers with originality, clear arguments, persuasive evidence, intelligent analysis, and clear writing. The primary criterion upon which manuscripts are judged is the contribution provided to the advancement of knowledge on topics identified by the three Working Groups as detailed in the Basic Agreement. The editorial policy strives to support those individuals submitting their manuscripts for review. Prospective authors, who are unsuccessful in their initial effort to gain publication approval, may be encouraged to revise their manuscripts in accordance with the suggestions of the reviewers. The Journal's editorial decision is final; and no appeals can be made to IAMU officials.
Manuscript submission clearly implies a commitment to publish in the IAMU Journal. Previously published papers and papers under review by another journal are not accepted and should not be submitted for editorial review. The cover letter providing the manuscript should state clearly that the manuscript has neither been published elsewhere, accepted for publication elsewhere, nor under editorial review for publication elsewhere. Additionally, the cover letter must contain a statement that the institution's IAMU representative is aware of the submission.
