    Dear Colleagues,

IAMU, with its mission of intensification of international collaboration in the fields of maritime knowledge, education, training and research, represents the core of uniquely innovative and proactive global network in contributing to keep and shape the World Maritime Culture today and tomorrow.

On behalf of Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy it is a great honor and privilege for me to invite your participation in the 10th Jubilee Annual General Assembly (AGA 10) of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) to be held in Saint Petersburg, Russian Federation in September 19-21, 2009.

Remembering the statement of Mr. Sasakawa that, Çit is vital for many sectors of society to work togetherÈ the theme of AGA 10 is ÇMET Trends in the XXI Century: Shipping Industry and Training Institutions in the global environment - area of mutual interests and cooperationÈ.

Assembly takes place at an important time for IAMU and the global maritime Community. This year IMO, where IAMU holds NGO status, will hold its 26th Assembly. Go-To-Sea Campaign launched by IMO Secretary-General last year gathers strength. Comprehensive review of the STCW Convention and the Code is a very important event linking functionally the activities of MET institutions and Industry. The year of 2009 is significant for Russian Maritime Education as well. It is an honor for us to announce that this year we celebrate 200 years anniversary of Transport Education in Russia.

We are also looking forward to the IAMU Student program, which will be held in the AMSMA campus in Saint Petersburg. Among other activities, participating students will have the opportunity to present their research on a wide variety of maritime topics associated with the main theme ÇOpportunities and challenges for Youth to work in the Shipping IndustryÈ, visit AMSMA classes, and tour our training ship MIR and Makarov Training Centre.

Round-table Panel with Shipping Industry on hot topics of quality of seafarers and supply/demand ratio will be held during the Assembly. The general theme of the Panel is ÇSeafarers: Quality, Quantity and Career DevelopmentÈ

We look forward to seeing you in September 2009 in Saint Petersburg and hope that the 10th Annual General Assembly will truly further our vision of mutual interests and cooperation of MET institutions and Industry.

    Sincerely,
    Dr. Valery L. Mikheev, Rector

  • New-Year Message from Chair

On the occasion of the 2009 New Year, please allow me to congratulate you on your achievements and progress in the year 2008, and to extend my warmest wishes to you and your family for a wonderful and joyous Holiday season, and a merry and successful New Year.

The year 2008 has been a productive year for IAMU with the generous support from The Nippon Foundation and the participation and efforts from all the member institutions.

It is the first year that IAMU works under the revised Basic Agreement and new framework, and also the first year for IAMU to function as an NGO of IMO(International Maritime Organization). The establishment of the five standing committees has facilitated the work in IAMU and IAMU is now working more efficiently than ever to be able to make the highest quality contributions to the international maritime community.

In October, California Maritime Academy hosted the 9th Annual General Assembly (AGA9) under the theme of 'Common Seas, Common Shores: The New Maritime Community'. As always, it was supported by The Nippon Foundation and was a very successful event. The 10th Annual General Assembly will be held in St. Petersburg, hosted by Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy. I hope to see you all at the Assembly then.
The year 2009 will see the 10th birthday of IAMU, which undoubtedly will be an important milestone in its development. I am very optimistic and confident that it will be another busy and hopefully fruitful year. I hope you will remain enthusiastic and active in IAMU activities, and I would like to ask you for your gracious support and cooperation in the coming year.

Again greetings with best wishes for the New Year.

  • The 9th Annual General Assembly (AGA9) was held on 19-22 October, 2008 at California Maritime Academy in San Francisco, U.S.A.

  • IAMU NGO Status was approved by IMO
IMO (International Maritime Organization) approved NGO Status to IAMU today, 29 November 2007 at its 25th Assembly meeting in London. It takes immediate effect.
IAMU applied for the status in 2005, and has gone through a number of scrutiny of various committees and council meetings. According to the official rules and regulations of IMO concerning NGO, IAMU can now enjoy privileges to attend official meetings, to voice its views and comments, to provide information, to submit proposals, to participate in various working group activities of IMO, and so forth.
This status is certainly a prestige to any organization in the international maritime community.

IAMU has already established "IMO Liaison Committee" internally as a standing committee to satisfactorily meet the privilege and responsibilities of this honour.

Groups of members are already preparing submission of information to IMO as early as January next year.
