Overview:

SMU has a history of 95 years because it grew out of the Shipping Section of Shanghai Industrial College founded in 1909. SMU provides 34 programs leading to the Bachelor's degree, 12 programs leading to the Associate's degree, 2 of which are jointly run with U.S.A. SMU has been authorized by the State to offer 3 programs leading to the Doctor's degree and 25 programs leading to the Master's degree. SMU is proud of having a competent full-time teaching staff of over 600, including more than 300 professors and associate professors, and 13,000 students studying for the Bachelor's degree or the Associate's degree, nearly 2,000 graduate students studying mostly for the Master's degree and partly for the Doctor's degree, as well as over 4,500 students receiving adult education.
SMU has 11 colleges such as Merchant Marine College, College of Transport, School of Economics, College of Engineering, College of Foreign Languages, Division of Basic Courses, Continuing Education College, Graduate School, etc. Merchant Marine College (MMC) consists of the Navigation Department and Marine Engineering Department. It trains senior navigational professionals, and is thus renowned as a "cradle of seafarers".
