Texas A&M University at Galveston: Where education meets the ocean

At Texas A&M University at Galveston, the ocean is our classroom. Ocean voyages aboard the USTS TEXAS CLIPPER, sailing Galveston bay, beachfront experiments and independent study complement the rigorous classroom experience. Our hands-on culture takes ideas from the classroom to the ocean. We have a well earned reputation for academic excellence and commitment to students. About 1,700 undergraduate students from every state and 14 nations study ocean-oriented science, engineering, transportation, business and liberal arts.

HIGHLIGHTS:

• The only state maritime academy offering undergraduate degrees from a top twenty public Doctoral Extensive University, Texas A&M University.
• Graduates become members of the Association of Former Students, a worldwide network of 260,000 Aggies.
• TAMUG faculties are recognized world wide for ocean research.
• Undergraduates often work with faculty in laboratories, field experiences, and independent study courses and even publish professional works.
• Maritime cadets comprise approximately 13% of student body and participate in college life including residential halls and student organizations with students outside of the license program.
  • TAMUG Varsity Sailing Team ranked in the top 20 in North America and has won the North American Sloop Championship.
  • The Offshore Sailing Team has been invited to the prestigious Kennedy Cup for the past seven years and competes and wins in many offshore regattas.

• Approximately 275 students participate in the license option program that affords each deck student intensive bridge management, navigation, and ship handling experience and each engineering cadet direct exposure to professional engineers and problem solving.
  • State of the art 50,000 sq. ft. engineering complex opened in Spring 2005.
  • An active small boat fleet and marine terminal comprising more than 60 research, recreational, outreach and training boats.
  • Multiple simulation venues for ship handling, radar, navigation, diesel propulsion, and cargo handling.
• The only state maritime academy located on the Gulf of Mexico with direct access to seven of the top ten United States ports by tonnage as well as proximity to one of the world's largest petrochemical complexes.
