Overview:
The World Maritime University (WMU) was established in Malmö, Sweden, in 1983, under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). WMU serves the international maritime community as IMO's apex institution for postgraduate education and research; over the last two decades, WMU has become a globally recognised centre of excellence in the maritime world. WMU offers an extensive postgraduate programme, and also an extensive range of consultancy services to industry and government.
Postgraduate programmes:
- MSc in Maritime Affairs, taught in Malmö, Sweden; students may specialise in Maritime Administration, Maritime Safety & Environmental Protection, Maritime Education & Training, Integrated Coastal & Ocean Management, Port Management or Shipping Management.
- MSc in International Transport & Logistics, taught in Shanghai, China.
- PhD in Maritime Law, jointly with the University of Wales Swansea, UK
- Professional Doctorate in Maritime Administration (from 2006)
Consultancy Services:
- Professional Development Courses: industry-tailored short courses providing specialised updating, held in Malmö or elsewhere on request, and lasting from a few days to a few weeks. Topics are wide-ranging and include maritime law, implementing IMO Conventions, port marketing, maritime security, shipping management and logistics.
- Contract Research Projects: a combination of academic and professional experts carry out research projects for industry and government. We have a successful track record in areas as diverse as maritime training, port and ship management, and marine environmental management.
- Expert Consultants, who provide practical, rigorous and hard-hitting advice across the maritime field, on issues such as maritime law, Quality Assurance, maritime education and training, and maritime English.
Updates:
WMU continues to develop and refine its teaching, research and consultancy activities.
In May 2004, WMU underwent its quinquennial review of academic quality, undertaken by the European University Association. The results of the most recent Quality Audit are published on the WMU web site.
