On-board training

International Executive Committee decided to set "On board training" as the second Theme of the Year for 2006 in parallel with LNG Initiative at its meeting at Dalian Maritime University in March, 2006.

STCW95 Code mandates both navigation and engine cadets to have On-board training, with following requirement:

Every candidate for certification as officer…shall follow an approved programme of on-board training which …is closely supervised and monitored by qualified officers aboard the ships in which the approved seagoing service is performed" (Code A-II/1.6.2 and A-III/1.2.2)

Because it is extremely costly for maritime education and training institutions to acquire and maintain a training ship for their cadets for on-board training always in good order, it is recognized by the members of IAMU of the critical importance:

  1. to standardize on-board training programme among its members,
  2. to standardize manners and criteria of monitoring and assessment,
  3. to share the experience and know-how of the qualified officers (instructors) in charge of on-board training at the member institutions, andto explore and pursue opportunities and possibilities to maximize the utilization of all the available resources of on-board training possessed by the IAMU member institutions so that this important part of maritime education and training (MET) can be offered to as many cadets as possible.

Chair is now organizing the best formation of the members to work on this Theme.
